BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team played its home opener Tuesday night against No. 11 Alabama, falling to the Tide 4-0 at Mary Bowers Field.
The Crimson Tide (10-2) got on the board early in the top half of the first inning when left fielder Kaylee Tow hit a 1-1 pitch high over the wall in right center to give Alabama the lead 1-0. The Blazers would threaten in the bottom half of the inning with runners on second and third and one out but couldn't come up with the clutch hit and left the runners stranded.
Alabama added to its lead in the fourth, with one out and the bases loaded KB Sides singled to left field scoring a run from third and advanced everyone up a base. Outfielder Merris Schroder hit a groundout to second base that scored the second run of the inning.
The Tide would hold their 3-0 lead until the seventh inning when they tacked on one final. Peyton Grantham leadoff with a double to right center and was moved to third on a bunt single. Bailey Hemphill would score Grantham from third with a sacrifice fly.
Emily Kachel got the start for UAB in the circle and tossed four innings against Alabama giving up three runs on four hits. She recorded just one strike out and allowed three walks. Kachel suffered the loss and falls to 4-4 on the year.
