BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Friday night's eighth inning magic rolled over into Saturday as the UAB baseball team defeated Brown Green 4-2 in a Saturday matinee at Regions Field to pick up a win in the opening series of the season.
Entering the home half of the eighth inning down by two runs, Tyler Tolbert led the Blazers off with a single. Price Visintainer picked up his only hit of the day, a single, advancing Tolbert to third putting runners on the corners with no outs and Colton Schultz at the plate. Schultz grounded to third base advancing Visintainer bringing Carter Pharis to the dish with one out.
Pharis singled to center scoring Tolbert and Visintainer knotting the game at two. Pharis moved up one base on a wild pitch before Brett Blackwood flied out to deep center allowing Pharis to advance to third.
Pharis scored the winning run on a passed ball as Davis advanced 90-feet to second. Antonio Ralat reached base on an overthrown ball by the Falcons' third basemen that allowed Davis to reach home giving the game its final score of 4-2.
"Maybe the eighth inning is our magic inning," head coach Brian Shoop said. "We have played really well at Regions Field and found ways to win. Honestly we thought we'd make a run, you don't know if it's going to happen or not, but we thought we would make one.
We saw Tyler's speed come into play when a mishit ball turns into a hit. I have confidence every time Colton and Carter come to the plate."
Bowling Green got on the scoreboard first in the second inning stringing together one run on three hits to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Falcons built on their lead in the fourth inning with a Cam Daughtery homerun down the left field line putting the score at 2-0.
Ryan Ruggles made his first start of the season throwing a solid five innings and allowed just two earned runs on six hits while striking out four batters.
Cole Cordrey was credited with the win in his UAB debut coming in relief of Ruggles in the sixth inning. He gave up just two hits with two strikeouts over three innings of work.
"Ruggles kept us in the game and Cordrey had a great first outing," Shoop said.
Following the magical eighth inning, Isaiah Gonzales-Montoya was called on for the second time in two days. A perfect ninth inning gave the Senior a save to go along with his Friday night win.
"For Isaiah to get a win and a save in two days is pretty cool," Shoop said.
Chandler Stillings was credited with the loss for Bowling Green as the Falcons starter, Kody Brown, lasted six innings giving up no runs on eight hits.
"Brown was tough," Shoop said. "He had four pitches and threw them all for strikes, he never patterned and mixed it up really well. We didn't get a lot of good pitches to hit and honestly I was happy when he left the game."
The series finale is set for Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Regions Field with Ryan Wesson making his UAB debut.
