BIRMINGHAM – UAB volleyball's Victoria Young was honored by Conference USA with the C-USA Spirit of Service Award. She was one of 14 individuals to be recognized by the league.
The award spotlights the community service efforts of one student-athlete from each member institution. The award is based on community service, good academic standing and participation in the elected sport.
"Our entire staff and team is so proud of Victoria for being awarded the C-USA Spirit of Service," head coach Amy Pauly said. "She is an incredible role model for young student-athletes and shows that you can balance hard work in the classroom and on the court with giving back to your community."
A recent UAB graduate, Young has completed over 150 hours of community service since the fall of 2014. She has spent 35 hours at the Children's of Alabama Hospital washing wagons used by patients to ride in, instead of wheelchairs.
Young has volunteered her time with the Miracle League of Gardendale, at MLK Service day, the Ronald McDonald House, the Exceptional and Lakeshore Foundations and has gone to local elementary schools to read to children.
She earned C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll in 2018 and graduated on Saturday with a degree in communications.
On the court, Young has a career season in 2018 with 201 kills, 17 aces and 85 total blocks. Over her five season with the Blazers, she played in 404 sets, earned 689 kills and scored 940.5 points. The Mobile native totaled 689 blocks in her career which ranks her ninth all-time in UAB history.
