UAB Returns to Bartow Arena to Face Alabama A&M

BIRMINGHAM – The (RV) UAB women's basketball team returns to the friendly confines of Bartow Arena for a two-game homestand beginning with Alabama A&M on Wednesday, November 28. Tipoff between the Blazers and Bulldogs is set for 6 p.m.
UAB (4-1) is coming off a second place finish at the Junkanoo Jam last week in Bimini, Bahamas, where it defeated Oklahoma, 89-84, in the semifinals before losing to No. 11 Tennessee in overtime in the Championship Game.
Katelynn Thomas earned Conference USA Player of the Week honors after her performance last week at Chicago State and in Bimini. The Birmingham native averaged 19.0 points and shot 66.7 percent from the floor (24-of-36), netting a career-high 22 points against Oklahoma when she went 10-of-11 from the field. Thomas found the double figure scoring column in all three games and led the Blazers in scoring in every contest en route to All-Tournament accolades.
UAB currently ranks 25th nationally in scoring, averaging a league best 82.6 points per game. The Blazers have three players in the top-15 in the conference in scoring, headlined by Rachael Childress' 16.2 points per game, the sixth highest in C-USA.
Childress has been dominant from beyond the 3-point line as the Moulton, Ala., native ranks ninth in the NCAA in 3-point field goals per game, 3.8, helping the team to 10.0 3-pointers per contest, good for 13th in the nation
The Blazers' 1.5 assist-to-turnover mark is the eighth best in the nation as Miyah Barnes leads the team with a 3.2 mark of her own and Barnes ranks third nationally in assists per game (7.6).
Alabama A&M (1-3) is in the midst of a two-game losing skid with loses to Tennessee Lipscomb and Kansas. The Bulldogs average 59.8 points per game, while giving up 68.0 for a -8.2 scoring margin.
Elexis Evans leads the team with 8.8 points per game to go along with a 66.0 percent (14-of-21) mark from the field. Nigeria Jones is averaging 7.8 points per contest, but leads the squad with 20 assists.
UAB is 7-0 all-time against Alabama A&M, including a perfect 6-0 record against the Bulldogs in Bartow Arena. Head coach Randy Norton is 12-3 all-time against teams from the State of Alabama.
Wednesday night is Team Night at Bartow Arena as youth teams that submit their roster to Vanessa Hill, vhill@uab.edu, by November 27 will receive free admission into the game. Additional tickets can be purchased online or at the Bartow Arena Ticket Office and are $5 fro adults or $3 for kids 18 and younger.
