BIMINI, Bahamas – The UAB women's basketball team will have a chance to claim the title of the Juanknoo Division of the Resort World Junkanoo Jam on Saturday afternoon when it takes on Tennessee. Tipoff between the Blazers is set for 1 p.m. CST from Gateway Christian Academy.
UAB (4-0) reached the championship game after it defeated Oklahoma 89-84 in the semifinal game on Thursday. Five players finished the game in the double figure scoring column as the Blazers reached their best start to a season since 1994-95.
One of the reasons for the Blazers' success is their ability to shoot the basketball as they are shooting 48.4 percent (125-of-258) from the field, the 24th best mark in the NCAA and the highest in Conference USA. UAB boats two of the top-40 shooters in the country as Katelynn Thomas ranks 20th overall, firing 69.4 percent (25-of-36) from the field and Deanna Kuzmanic ranks 36th shooting 63.9 percent (23-of-36).
UAB has been just as strong from beyond the arc as it ranks 15th in the country in 3-point field goals per game, averaging 10.3 per contest. Rachael Childress leads the way, knocking down 3.5 per game, the 21st most in the country.
The Blazers are just as good as defending the long ball, holding teams to a mere 18.6 percent (13-of-70) from beyond the arc. That mark ranks 12th nationally and is the second best in C-USA.
Tennessee (4-0) reached the finals of the Junkanoo Jam with a 78-66 win over Clemson. The Lady Vols are averaging 86.0 points per game, while holding opponents to just 48.0 per game to boast the eighth best scoring margin in the country at +38.0.
Meme Jackson headlines five Lady Vols averaging double figure scoring each night as she is netting 14.3 per game. The senior was 4-of-9 from beyond the arc against Clemson to lead the Lady Vols with 14 points.
UAB and Tennessee are meeting for just the third time in program history with the Lady Vols leading the series 2-0. The two squads last met in 1995 with Tennessee taking the 77-42 victory under legendary head coach Pat Summitt.
Women's basketball season tickets are available by purchasing the 2018-19 Gold Card for $65. The Gold Card includes access to home volleyball, baseball and softball games in addition to all 12 of women's basketball's remaining home contests.
