Blazers Achieve Multitude of Wins in Final Fall Competition

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's tennis team closed out its fall season in impressive fashion, winning 15 matches at the Pelham Racquet Club Invite.
The event, hosted by Samford University, featured players from UAB, Alabama State, Kennesaw State, Mississippi State, Presbyterian and Samford. After playing Friday's matches indoors at Samford due to weather, the tournament resumed play on Saturday at its originally-scheduled location at Pelham Racquet Club.
The Blazers kicked off the winning on Friday, claiming victories in five doubles matches. Daniel Janko and Nikolai Manchev defeated Alabama State's Tomas Fernandez and Carl-Louis Luckmann, 6-1, before taking down Samford's Jack Lyttle and Rossouw Norval, 6-2. Giovani Pasini and Fernando Vargas won their first doubles match of the event as well, defeating Mississippi State's Gregor Ramskogler and Stedman Strickland, 7-6. Brian Akhtar and Tom el Safadi got in on the winning as well, winning two matches against Kennesaw State's Jose Galves and Jack Sorel (6-2) and Alabama State's Andrej Trakovski and Alejo Calvis (7-5).
Saturday saw the Green and Gold claim six more wins. Janko paced UAB with two wins on the second day of the event, winning matches against Lucas de Torres Curth (Kennesaw State), 6-1, 6-1 and Ion Efrim (Alabama State), 6-3, 6-7, 6-2. The Blazers notched three victories against Presbyterian on Saturday, as Pasini defeated Alberto Conde, 6-0, 6-1, Manchev defeated Elias Svensson and Vargas took down Jonathan Bedard, 7-6, 6-2. El Safadi possessed UAB's sixth victory of the day, winning against Strickland (Mississippi State), 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
The success carried over to Sunday, as UAB took home four more wins. Janko defeated Norval (Samford) in the first singles match of the day, 6-3, 6-2. Manchev won against Juan Rodriguez (Alabama State), 7-5, 7-5, while Vargas defeated Svensson (Presbyterian), 6-3, 6-3. Akhtar won in the Blazers' final match of the weekend, defeating Trajkovski (Alabama State), 6-2, 7-5.
The Blazers return to the courts on January 19, 2019, at the LSU Dual in Baton Rouge, La., to kick off the spring competitive season.
