BIRMINGHAM β Coming off a stellar start to the 2018-19 season, the (16) UAB bowling team returns to action this weekend when it travels west for the eighth annual Kat Klash Classic hosted by Sam Houston State at Emerald Lanes.
Β
The tournament will follow the traditional format with five Baker games on Friday, five Traditional games on Saturday and three best-of-seven bracket-round matches on Sunday. This year's field is loaded, with 12 top-25 teams in action.
Β
"This event presents us with the opportunity to once again compete against some of the best programs in the country," head coach Michelle Crews said. "We saw a lot of positives in our first tournament in New Orleans, but also some things that we needed to get better at. I feel like the girls really worked hard in practice to clean up some of those mistakes, so I am excited to watch them perform this weekend."
Β
Last season, the Green and Gold finished the event in 12th place, going 5-7 overall. Caitlin Cunningham led the team with a 26th place finish and a 193.00 average. UAB has appeared in this event every year with the exception of the 2011 and 2016 seasons.
Β
The Blazers are coming off a sixth-place finish at the Allstate Sugar Bowl, where Cayla Davidson led the way for UAB with a total pinfall of 947 to finish 12th overall. Cunningham (940) and Taylor Russell (905) also finished in the top-25 in the season-opening event, placing 15th and 23rd, respectively.
Β
Competing for UAB this weekend in Houston is Russell, Cunningham, Samantha Johnson, Rachel Strogin, Rachael Berg, Annie Hurley, Katie Hurley and Elise London.
Β
UAB finishes competition in the fall semester at the Alabama State Hornet Classic in Montgomery on November 16-18.
