BIRMINGHAM – After another strong weekend on the lanes, the UAB bowling team notched its second top-10 finish of the season when it claimed 10th place in a loaded field at the Track Kat Klash Classic hosted by Sam Houston State.
Junior Caitlin Cunningham was UAB's top performer in Houston, finishing the event in second place with a total pinfall of 1,085 for an average of 217.00. Her efforts saw her named to the All-Tournament Team.
"We have a lot we learned as we prepare for our first conference match next week," head coach Michelle Crews said. "I really thought that Caitlin and Annie both bowled amazing this weekend in such a tough field."
UAB opened the tournament with wins in its Baker matches against Prairie View A&M (909-815) and in-state rival Alabama A&M (817-745) before concluding Friday's Baker schedule in 12th place.
Saturday saw two of the Blazers' best performances of the season, scoring over 1,000 twice. The first of those big scores came in the team's first Traditional match, when it defeated Texas Southern, 1,057-773. That momentum carried into the second match of the day when the Blazers topped Southern University, 1,048-885.
The Blazers concluded Saturday's action with a 975-886 victory over Maryville University, which saw them move into seventh place on the weekend heading into bracket play.
UAB faced a tall task in Sunday's championship bracket, squaring off with the hosts, Sam Houston State. After dropping the first match, UAB knotted things up at 1-1 with a 215-156 victory. However, the Bearkats went on to take the final three matches as UAB finished the competition in tenth.
Annie Hurley was UAB's only other bowler who finished in the top-25, taking 14th overall with an average of 198.40 and a pinfall of 992. Taylor Russell (914) and Rachel Strogin (904) finished in 35th and 37th, respectively.
UAB now sets its sights on its first MEAC competition, which we will be held on Nov. 10-11 in Dover, Delaware.
