Blazers Notch Four Victories at ITF Futures

BIRMINGHAM β The UAB men's tennis team completed play at the ITF Futures event at Highland Park on Sunday, claiming four wins.

The Blazers sent four competitors, Daniel Janko, Brian Akhtar, Fernando Vargas and Nikolai Manchev, to the event.

Janko, Akhtar and Manchev each advanced in the qualifying singles bracket, with Janko pacing the team with two victories.

The Czech Republic native defeated Ryosuke Sowa (6-1, 6-1) and Jake Kusmider (6-2, 6-2) before falling to Jeremy Gschwendtner, 6-1, retired. Akhtar and Manchev each won once, claiming victories over Caleb Strother (6-2, 6-3) and Scott Robertson (6-1, 6-3), respectively.

The Blazers return to the courts on Friday to take part in the Birmingham Country Club Invitational from Nov. 2-4.
