BIRMINGHAM – UAB could not have asked for a better start to its 2018-19 season, posting a 10-3 record over the weekend, including a 5-0 mark on Saturday, en route to a sixth-place finish at the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
Of the 10 wins tallied by the Blazers, three of those came against teams ranked in the top 10 in the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) polls.
UAB kicked off the weekend by pulling a huge upset in its first Baker match with a 956-954 victory over sixth-ranked Stephen F. Austin. Following a loss in its next match against Jackson State, the Blazers clinched wins over in-state rivals Alabama State (878-838) and Alabama A&M (810-643).
The Blazers faced another tall task to wrap up competition on Friday when it squared off with another top-10 team in host Tulane. Their hard-fought performance came up just short, though, as the Blazers fell, 915-866, and concluded day one in eighth place with a total pinfall of 4,358.
Saturday did not disappoint for UAB, as the Blazers went 5-0 on the day to jump into seventh place heading into match play. Victories over Grambling State (850-655) and Louisiana Tech (905-867) gave the Blazers momentum heading into their third top-10 showdown of the weekend with No. 4 Sam Houston State, which UAB won 905-867.
Looking to continue its winning ways in their fourth Traditional match against Valparaiso, UAB needed clean 10th frames to come away with the 951-949 victory. Cayla Davidson, Rachel Strogin and Caitlin Cunningham each bowled clean frames in the match to preserve the victory.
The team's perfect day was capped off by another win over in-state foe Alabama State, 907-792, to improve to 8-2 on the weekend.
Sunday saw the Blazers come from behind in their opening round of match play, topping Jackson State 4-3 (157-169, 171-204, 197-135, 142-193, 193-180, 236-161, 207-160) to set up a second-round showdown with Valparaiso.
Unlike its first meeting Valpo earlier in the weekend, the Blazers made quick work of Crusaders with a 4-0 sweep (181-149, 187-162, 173-153, 193-167) to advance to the Position Round, where the Blazers eventually fell to host Tulane, 4-2, to close out the weekend.
Individually, Davidson led the way for UAB with a total pinfall of 947 to finish of 12th overall, while Cunningham (940) and Russell (905) finished in 15th and 23rd, respectively, to round out the Blazers' contingent in the top 25.
UAB returns to the lanes on November 4 when the team makes its way to Houston to compete in the Kat Klash Classic hosted by Sam Houston State. More information on the tournament can be found here.
