CHOUDRANT, La. – After 36 holes on Monday at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate hosted by Louisiana Tech, the UAB men's golf team leads the field at 20 under par heading into the Tuesday's final round at Squire Creek Country Club.
The Blazers were exceptional on Monday and shot their low score of the season in consecutive rounds of 10 under par (278), which has them two shots ahead of Georgia entering the final 18 holes.
Individually, UAB had two tremendous performances from junior William Walker III and senior John Hayden. Walker III is the leader in the clubhouse at -9 (67-68 = 135), while Hayden shot the low round of the day with a six-under 66 in the first round, and followed that up with a 71 in the second round. He is currently in third at -7.
"Our guys battled hard today in some tough conditions," head coach Mike Wilson said. "It was a complete team effort and we look forward to the challenge tomorrow. I am very pleased with how we kept our composure today."
Redshirt freshman John Snoddy is also under par for the Blazers at -1 and is tied for 11th overall. Snoddy was one-over after 18 holes, but fired a two-under 70 in the second round and moved up 11 spots to help UAB maintain its spot at the top of the leaderboard.
Sophomore Nick Robillard is tied for 20th at +1 and recovered nicely from a first round 76 (+4), with a second round 69 (-3). Sam Goldisach (72-79 = 151, +7) is in 51st place with 18 holes left to play.
It is a two-team race for the title tomorrow as UAB (-20) and Georgia (-18) are the only teams under par, followed by Cincinnati (+4), Lamar (+7) and Abilene Christian (+9). If UAB can hang on for the team title, it would be its first since Sept. 26, 2015 at Shoal Creek.
