GREENSBORO, N.C. – After 36 holes on the opening day of the Starmound Fall Classic, the UAB women's golf team is in third place out of 15 teams heading into Tuesday's final round at Starmount Forest Country Club.
The Blazers shot +24 overall today with a 303 in the first round (+15) and a 297 in the second round (+9). UAB trails only Tennessee (+8) and UNC Greensboro (+21) heading into Tuesday's final round.
"Today was a grind and I am proud of how our team competed," said head coach Ryan Ashburn. "As a whole, it wasn't our best ball striking day, but I saw some incredible chips and putts which kept us motivated to keep fighting out there. The fact that we played that much better in the second round says a lot. It was a long day and they fought hard and we will be ready to go low tomorrow."
In her second tournament for the Blazers, junior Tia Teiniketo paced the Blazers with a one-under in the first round and a one-over in the second round to complete her day at even par. She enters the final 18 holes in third place overall and will look to catch Malia Stovall of Tennessee (-3) and Tara Bettle of UNC Greensboro (-2) for the individual title.
Maria Donado finds herself in the top 10 at four-over par and in a tie for eighth place. Donado shot a two-over 74 in both rounds today.
Kendall Johnson is tied for 24th at +8 and recovered nicely in the second round to shoot a one-over 73. Kenna Hughes (+12) is tied for 40th, while Lexie Dawson (+18) is tied for 60th.
The Blazers will tee off on Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. EST/8 a.m. CST and will be paired with the Lady Vols and the Spartans as the top three teams in the field.
