BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's basketball team takes to the road for the first time in league play when the Blazers travel to Boca Raton, Fla., Thursday at 6 p.m. (CT) to face Florida Atlantic at FAU Arena.
UAB (9-5, 0-1) owns a 6-2 record against Florida Atlantic in the all-time series that dates back to the 2008-09 season. In addition, the Blazers have won four straight against the Owls and were victorious 79-59 last season at Bartow Arena in the most recent meeting between the two schools.
The Blazers opened Conference USA play last Saturday and suffered a 63-60 setback to preseason favorite Middle Tennessee. Zack Bryant scored 15 points and grabbed a career-high four rebounds to lead four Blazers in double figures. Bryant ranks second on the team for UAB with 13.7 points per game.
William Lee added 12 points and four rebounds and enters play Thursday needing just 14 more blocks to tie Alan Ogg for the most rejections in school history with 266. Guard Nick Norton added 11 points against the Blue Raiders and is shooting 57.1 percent from three-point range over his last five games.
Senior forward Chris Cokley finished with 11 points and eight rebounds and continues to serve as the offensive catalyst for the Blazers. The Savannah, Ga., native averages 16.8 points and 9.4 rebounds per game and ranks seventh in Conference USA in scoring and second in rebounding. Cokley also stands second in the league with six double-doubles.
Florida Atlantic (6-7, 0-1) lost its fourth consecutive game when it dropped a 58-57 decision on the road against FIU on Saturday. The Owls have not won since posting a 106-46 victory over Webber International on Dec. 10. Florida Atlantic, however, is 4-1 at home and has won all four games by double digits.
Senior guard Gerdarius Troutman leads Florida Atlantic with 13.5 points per game and ranks seventh in Conference USA with a .451 three-point field goal percentage. Justin Massey adds 13.4 points per game, while Ronald Delph pours in 13.3 points per game and ranks fourth in the league with 8.7 rebounds per game.
