UAB Heads South to Take on FIU

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – With four of its next five games away from home, the UAB women's basketball team looks to kick off its road trip with a victory as the Blazers get set to face FIU at 6 p.m. (CST) on Thursday in Miami.
Continuing one of its best starts in program history at 15-3, the Blazers have been good on the road this year as they are off to a 5-1 start away from Bartow Arena.
"FIU is playing extremely well as of late and they have won their last three home games," head coach Randy Norton said. "I know our kids are going to be locked in and ready to go, though. They look at every game as a championship game and are ready to get to work."
The Blazers returned to their winning ways last Saturday as the Green and Gold took down North Texas 68-52 in the friendly confines of Bartow Arena. Katelynn Thomas led the way for UAB, matching a career-high with 22 points on a perfect 11-for-11 shooting effort, while Miyah Barnes finished the game with 12 points and 10 assists for her first career double-double.
Sophomore Rachael Childress scored 16 points in the win over the Mean Green and continues to lead the Blazers' offense with 14.6 points per game. Childress is Conference USA's top 3-point shooter, making 45.6 percent of her attempts from behind the arc. She currently leads the league and is 10th in the NCAA in that category.
Deanna Kuzmanic rounds out the trio of Blazers scoring in double figures with 12.4 points per game. Kuzmanic currently leads the league in assist/turnover ratio at 2.6
As a team, the Blazers are ranked top-25 nationally in multiple categories, including the No. 2 in 3-point field goal percentage (42.0), No. 14 in assist/turnover ratio (1.4) and No. 18 in assists per game (17.9). UAB also checks in at No. 26 in field goal percentage (46.1).
FIU (6-12, 3-2 C-USA) is led by Kiandre'a Pound, who is tops on the team in scoring (14.2 ppg) and rebounding (9.5 rpg). Kristian Hudson is the only other Panther averaging in double figures, pouring in 13.9 points per game, while leading the team in assists per game (4.0) and steals per game (1.3).
The two programs are meeting for the 12th time in program history with the Blazers holding an 8-3 advantage in the all-time series. UAB has won the previous two meetings over FIU, with the most recent a 61-52 Blazer win in Miami.
