BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Coming off a successful fall season, the UAB men's tennis team opens the fall season with two tough opponents as it travels to take on No. 14 Mississippi State on Sunday and Alabama on Monday.
The Blazers are meeting SEC competition for the first time since the 2015-16 season when the Green and Gold faced both Alabama and Mississippi State early in that season.
UAB wrapped up the 2016-17 campaign with a 10-12 season overall record, including a 2-4 record in C-USA and an 8-4 record at home. Over the course of the season, the Blazers combined for a 61-52 (.540) singles record and a 34-22 (.607) doubles record.
Sophomore Tim Dollman is coming off a stellar freshman campaign, compiling a 10-5 overall record in singles play which included a perfect 3-0 conference record and a 6-2 record in the No. 1 position. He also competed in the No. 1 doubles position, earning eight wins with Stefan Gonzalez en route to being named C-USA Freshman of the Year and being named to the All-Conference First Team.
Gonzalez also had a strong year in singles play as he recorded a 4-1 record in conference play to finish the season at 9-10 overall in the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Senior Anru Fourie played a big role for the team in his first year with the Blazers, compiling a 5-7 singles record and a 5-3 doubles record with fellow South African Kenton Parton.
Mississippi State enters the season ranked No. 14 following a 21-9 season and an appearance in the SEC Championship finals. The Bulldogs reached the NCAA Tournament Second Round before falling to Oklahoma, 4-1.
The Bulldogs were led by Nuno Borges, who finished the year with a 20-3 record which included a 9-2 record in SEC play. He finished his season with a run to the NCAA Championships Singles Semifinals.
Alabama finished the year 11-17 overall and 2-11 in conference play. The Crimson Tide were led by Mazen Osama, who finished the year with a 19-13 record in singles play.
UAB returns all of its 2016-17 squad with the exception of Christian Coetzee and Eric Komati, who both graduated. The team makes one addition to its squad in freshman Brian Akhtar.
