9/10/2017 7:12:00 PM | Men's Golf
Madison, Wis. – The UAB Men's Golf team completed the first day of the Badger Invitational at +4 (292), good for a sixth place tie with Oakland and Notre Dame. Texas A&M currently leads the twelve team field after firing an opening day -12, with Nevada (-3), Wisconsin (-3), Kansas (E) and Marquette (+4) rounding out the top five.
The Blazers brushed off a slow start by closing strong, led by Freshman Nick Robillard's three-under par, back nine showing. The Hoover, Ala. native, making his college debut, recorded five birdies on the round, including four over the course of the final nine holes. Robillard completed his eighteen holes at even par and sits in a tie for 19th place on the individual leader board.
As a team, the Blazers tallied 21 total birdies, with five players notching a birdie on the par five, 16th hole.
Redshirt Sophomore William Walker was the top UAB scorer at one under par and is tied for tenth overall. Following a double bogey on the third hole, Walker quickly bounced back with two consecutive birdies, and was steady throughout, keeping the Blazers in contention.
R.J. Keur (+1), John Racciatti (+4) and Taylor Eyster (+5) rounded out the scoring for the Blazers. Eyster led the club with six birdies.
Junior John Hayden added to UAB's efforts on Sunday after shooting a 73 (+1) and is tied for 29th.
Chandler Phillips of Texas A&M currently sits atop individual leaders in the clubhouse at six under.
Action continues tomorrow at University Ridge Golf Course for the second installment of the three day event. Taylor Eyster tees off at 9:00 a.m. to get things underway, as the Blazers will be paired with golfers from Rutgers and South Dakota State.
