MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Three first half goals propelled the UAB men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Memphis Sunday afternoon at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. UAB improves to 1-0-1 on the season while Memphis falls to 0-1-1.
"I was very pleased with our performance tonight," head coach Mike Getman said. "We were very good defensively and we scored some great goals."
UAB took a lead it would not relinquish at the 12:42 mark of the first half when forward Philip Makinde netted a cross from the left side that slipped through the Memphis keepers hands. Adam Brooker was given the assist on the play and the Blazers took a 1-0 lead.
Just three minutes later a foul inside the box set up forward Massimo Ferrin for a penalty kick that landed in the top left of the net and gave UAB a 2-0 lead.
The Blazers netted their final goal of the game at the 32-minute mark when defender David Valverde sent a strike from roughly five yards outside of the box that flew past the charging Memphis goalie giving UAB a 3-0 lead.
"I thought we were tired coming into the match but our depth really showed," Getman said. "We never lost a step when we made changes."
Valverde picked up the first goal of his career, Makinde's goal marked the second of his and Ferrin notched his fourth career goal.
Keeper James Teal recorded his first career win in goal picking up three saves on a day that the UAB defense allowed just nine shots.
UAB opened the season with consecutive shutouts for the first time since 2003. The Blazers now lead the all-time series against Memphis 20-19. Today's victory marked UAB's second largest margin of victory over the Tigers, the largest was a 5-1 win on Oct. 14, 1999.
The Blazers return to the pitch Friday Sept. 1 when they travel to Jacksonville to take on the Dolphins. First kick is set for 6 PM CT from Southern Oak Stadium.
