UAB Volleyball Earns Academic Award

LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Alabama at Birmingham Volleyball has earned the 2016-17 American Volleyball Coaches' Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award. The announcement came from the organization on Monday.
The Blazers are a part of history as a record breaking 822 teams spanning NCAA Division I, II, and III, NAIA, NJCAA, High School Girls and Boys, and two-year colleges and beach volleyball all won the award. The previous high was 764 teams set in 2015-16.
UAB is one of two Conference USA schools to earn the honor for the 2016-17 season.
The AVCA Team Award was established in 1992-93 to honor collegiate and high school volleyball teams who show high levels of excellence in the classroom. Teams must maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team grade-point average on a 5.0 scale. This is the 25th year of the AVCA Team Academic Award.
UAB opens the season on the road at the Boston College Invitational, Aug. 25-26. The Blazers return home for the Blazer Invitational Aug. 31-Sept. 3.
