UAB Softball Hosts UTEP in Final Home Series

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team closes its 2017 home schedule by hosting UTEP in a three-game conference series at Mary Bowers Field.
A doubleheader will be played Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and the series finale will be played Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.

THE SERIES
The Blazers hold a commanding, 21-9, lead in the all-time series with UTEP. The Blazers have won nine of the last 10 meetings with the Miners. The last time the two teams met was in 2016 where UAB swept the series with scores of: 10-3, 9-6 and 4-2.
ON THE BLAZERS
Analyse Petree paces the Blazers’ offense with a .278 batting average, has a team-high seven doubles and a .417 slugging percentage. The sophomore second baseman is second on the squad with 16 RBI and a .366 on-base percentage.
Destini England is hot on Petree’s heels with a .264 batting average. The Hoover, Ala., native leads the team with 38 hits, 20 runs and six triples.
Joanna Fallen continues to be consistent at the plate. The senior left fielder owns a .254 batting average, 35 hits, 16 runs, 15 RBI and ties for a team-high five home runs.
Claire Blount leads the UAB softball pitching staff with a 2.84 ERA. The freshman lefty has started a staff-high 16 games, thrown 10 complete games, recorded two shutouts and tallied 114 strikeouts in 138.0 innings of work.
SCOUTING UTEP
Taylor Sargent leads the Miners’ offense with a .351 batting average. She has recorded 40 hits, 16 runs and 19 RBI through 42 games.
Kiki Pepi has been another strong presence at the plate for UTEP. The senior infielder has 43 hits, 23 runs and 27 RBI this season and is slugging an impressive .512.
Kaitlin Fifield leads the UTEP pitching staff with a 4.93 ERA. She has thrown four complete games, picked up two saves and tallied 19 strikeouts in 86.2 innings pitched.
MARY BOWERS FIELD DEDICATION
Mary Bowers Field will be dedicated Saturday afternoon prior to the game in grateful recognition of gifts given by Keith and Mary Bowers.
Mr. and Mrs. Bowers enjoyed 50 years of marriage before she passed away Dec. 13, 2009. Mr. Bowers will be recognized during the dedication ceremony of the field that now bears his wife’s name.
ALUMNI DAY
Alumni Day will be Saturday afternoon and all UAB softball alumni that are in attendance will be recognized in between games of the doubleheader.

SENIOR DAY
Senior Day will be Sunday immediately following the series finale against UTEP and will be honoring the eight seniors on the UAB softball roster: Joanna Fallen, Danii Fernandez, Madison Hir, Amy Waters, Lauren Beshel, Cara Goodwin, Olivia Black and Mary Warren.

A LOOK AHEAD
The Blazers will be back on the road again as they travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn., May 3 to make-up the rescheduled doubleheader that was rained out on April 23 against Middle Tennessee. The Blazers fell to the Blue Raiders in the first game, 3-1.
