Blazers Fall in Game One to Middle Tennessee

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The UAB softball team fell to Middle Tennessee, 3-1, Saturday night at Blue Raiders Softball Stadium in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Middle Tennessee (16-23, 5-11) struck early and took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Summer Burgess scored on a fielder’s choice to the pitcher.
The Blue Raiders’ continued scoring in the bottom of the third inning. Back-to-back singles from Burgess and Precious Birdsong set Morgan Harris up with an RBI opportunity.
Harris punched one through the left side to plate Burgess. Austyn Whaley was next to the plate and sent a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Birdsong for the 3-0 advantage.
UAB (16-29, 7-9) scored its first and only run of the game in the top of the fifth inning. Amy Waters sent a double to center field to bring Analyse Petree around for the score and shrank Middle Tennessee’s lead, 3-1.
The Blazers tallied two hits on the night. Destini England was the first in the hit column with a single to shortstop before Waters’ double rounded out the hits for the night.
Claire Blount (7-10) suffered the loss in the circle for UAB. She tossed the complete game and gave up three runs on five hits and recorded three strikeouts.
Cori Jennings (9-12) celebrated the win for Middle Tennessee. She gave up only one run on two hits and tallied four strikeouts in seven innings of work.
A doubleheader will be played Sunday to determine the series. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
