UAB Softball Sweeps Doubleheader with UTEP

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team swept the UTEP Miners in the doubleheader played Saturday afternoon at Mary Bowers Field.
UAB 3, UTEP 1
UAB (17-29, 8-9) took the early, 1-0, lead in the first inning when Joanna Fallen reached on a fielder’s choice to third base that scored Destini England who had gotten on with a leadoff double.
The Blazers scored two more runs in the bottom of the third inning to make the score, 3-0. The first run came when Fallen singled through the right side to plate England.
The final UAB run came off the bat of Madison Millsaps when she singled through the left side and scored Danii Fernandez.
UTEP (11-32, 5-14) scored its only run of the game in the top of the sixth inning when Courtney Clayton singled to left field and plated Cortney Smith to make the score, 3-1.
The Blazers tallied nine hits in the game. England and Millsaps both had a two-hit game while Fernandez, Fallen, Mary Warren, Amy Waters and Natalie Erwin all contributed with one.
Cara Goodwin (5-11) celebrated the win in the circle for UAB. The senior right-hander tossed the complete game, gave up only one run and recorded five strikeouts.
Kaitlin Fifield (2-8) suffered the loss for the Miners. She gave up three runs on nine hits and tallied one strikeout in 3.0 innings of work.
UAB 3, UTEP 0
Both teams were held scoreless until the sixth inning when UAB (18-29, 9-9) took the, 3-0, lead and eventual win.
The first run came when pinch hitter Rian Brown drew a bases loaded walk to make the score, 1-0.
The final two runs of the game came off the bat of England when she singled to centerfield and scored Waters and Sophie Robic.
Claire Blount (8-10) got the win for the Blazers. She gave up four hits, recorded three strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter in the shutout.
Erika Harrawood (3-12) took the loss for UTEP (11-33, 5-15) in the circle. She pitched the entire game, gave up three runs on six hits and tallied seven strikeouts in the loss.
The two teams will meet for the series finale Sunday at Mary Bowers Field with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. and the senior day ceremony will be held immediately after the game is finished.
