ATHENS, Ga. – The UAB baseball team lost the series finale against Georgia on Sunday 1-0 after a quick game with little offense from either side. The Blazers are now 6-5 while the Bulldogs mirror that record at 5-6. It is the first weekend series UAB has lost this year after taking the first game 2-1 in 10 innings.
Thomas Lowery and Carson Jones combined to throw a two-hitter over eight innings. UAB gave up just four runs over the three games against the SEC foe.
“A couple little things cost us in a close game,” said UAB head coach Brian Shoop. “I know we’re competitive on the mound and defensively.”
The Blazers first hit came in the top of the second with a leadoff double by first baseman Thomas Johns but none of the subsequent three batters were able to advance Johns any further. Georgia responded with a leadoff double of their own by Austin Biggar. He advanced to third on a groundout and then Aaron Schunk scored Biggar with a sacrifice fly for the lone run of the game.
UAB threatened again in the top of the third inning. A single by Jared Nixon followed by a double by Zack Davis put runners on second and third with two outs but Riley McCown flied out to right field for the final out.
One of the highlights defensively for the Blazers on the afternoon was the final out of the bottom of the third. Catcher Stephen Dobbs flashed his arm strength with a throw to second base to catch Tucker Maxwell attempting to steal.
Lowery went 10 straight batters without allowing a baserunner before departing for Jones. The senior lefty finished with a line of 5.2 innings, two hits, one run, one walk, and three strikeouts.
Jones would come in and display an equally dominant performance. He finished with a line of 2.1 innings, no hits, two walks, and one K.
The Blazers went hitless over the final six innings of the game. Georgia starter Chase Adkins threw a complete game finishing with four hits, one walk, and five strikeouts.
UAB heads into a home-and-home midweek series with Alabama A&M. The first game is scheduled for 2 PM at the Bulldogs home park on Tuesday, March 7.
“I’m frustrated but at the same time, our kids have to walk away from here going ‘we can play with anybody,’” said Shoop. “We just have to be more competitive offensively. Baseball season is a long season. No team is ever from start to finish. We’re going to keep grinding and keep working.”
