Blazers Split on Second Day of Madeira Beach Tournament

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. - The UAB softball team split games on the second day of the EMU Madeira Beach Spring Invitational. The Blazers defeated Siena, 6-5, and fell to Boston, 5-3.

Amy Waters had the game-saving diving catch in center field to nab the Blazers' first win of the 2017 season.
UAB (1-5, 0-0) didn't score its first run until the fifth inning when Danii Fernandez singled up the middle to bring Rachel Dunsford around to score.
The bulk of the Blazers' damage would be done in the top of the seventh inning when UAB plated five runs to take the lead from Siena.
Katelyn Prater scored the first run of the inning by stealing home. The second run came when the Saints first baseman committed an error and scored Tori Perkins and Natalie Erwin.
Madison Millsaps was the hero of the seventh inning when she knocked a standup double to left-center field and plated Makayla Hayes and Katlyn Sides to take the 6-5 lead.
Siena (0-4, 0-0) was first on the board when it scored two runs in the third inning. Jessika Jaime singled up the middle and brought Paige Hess and Patricia Kalesse around to score, giving the Saints the 2-0 advantage.
The third run came in the bottom of the third inning and the final two runs came in the fifth inning when Loryn DeFalco launched a home run ball over the left-center wall.
Madison Hir (1-1) got the victory in the circle for the Blazers. She pitched 3.1 innings and gave up only two runs.
Claire Blount only pitched to two batters but got the job done and captured the first save of the season for the UAB pitching staff.
Brooke Hughes (0-1) took the loss for the Saints in the circle. She tossed a complete game and gave up only three hits.
UAB 3, BOSTON 5
Boston (3-4, 0-0) struck first in the first inning in its win over UAB. Gabbi Martinez hit a three-run home run over the left field wall that brought in Alex Heinen and Moriah Connolly along with her.
UAB (1-6, 0-0) fought back and scored three runs of its own in the third inning when Analyse Petree singled to shortstop and scored Destini England to make the score 3-1. The second run came when Sides scored on a wild pitch and the tying run came off the bat of Erwin when she singled to right field and plated Petree.
The Terriers scored two more runs in the sixth and seventh innings to capture the 5-3 win.
Perkins (0-1) took the loss for the Blazers. She pitched 0.2 innings and gave up the go-ahead run.
Kali Magane (2-2) got the win for the Terriers in the circle. She didn't give up any runs and recorded three strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.
The Blazers will be back in action Sunday as they face Villanova at 8 a.m. in the last game of the EMU Madeira Beach Spring Invitational.
