UAB Softball Drops Game Against Villanova in Madeira Beach

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The UAB softball team dropped its last game of the EMU Madeira Beach Spring Invitational against Villanova, 8-3.
Villanova (3-2, 0-0) was first on the board when Caroline Jones hit a three-run home run over the left field wall.
The Wildcats plated a single run in the third inning and two more in the fifth when Nikki Alden homered to left field, bringing Lauren Hanna around to score with her.
The first of the final two Villanova runs came in the sixth inning when Megan Ruiz scored on a UAB fielding error and the second came when Becky Ducar got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Despite having a game-high eight hits, UAB (1-7, 0-0) could only push three runs across the plate.
The first run came in the third inning when Joanna Fallen launched a solo home run over the left field wall; her second of the season.
The final two runs came in the fifth inning when Rachel Dunsford joined Fallen in the home run hitting club and hammered a long ball to left field.
Madison Hir (1-2) got the loss in the circle for the Blazers. She tossed two innings and gave up three runs.
Brette Lawrence (1-0) picked up her first win of the season for Villanova. She pitched the complete game, recorded six strikeouts and gave up only three runs.
UAB will be home Feb. 24-26 as it joins Samford to co-host the Samford/UAB Tournament.
