IRVING, Texas – David Valverde, Mathieu Laurent and Massimo Ferrin have all been named to the Conference USA Second Team, the league announced on Tuesday.
"I am pleased for all three guys as they are all well deserving," head coach Mike Getman said.
Valverde started every game for the Blazers this season in the midfield. The senior netted his first career goal this season in a 3-0 win at Memphis. Additionally, he set career highs in points (2), shots on goal (3), shot percentage (.111) and shots on goal percentage (.333).
"David has been our midfield general for four years," Getman said. "His performance level has been at the very top of C-USA."
"It is great to be recognized individually as a player in this great league where the competition is tough because of the amount of skillful players," Valverde said.
Laurent, the team captain for a second consecutive season, played almost every minute of every match he appeared in. The Ontario native found the back of the net at Georgia State and netted the game winner in a 2-0 win over Florida Atlantic. The team's leader in the defense helped the Blazers to rank third in the league in goals allowed and fifth in goals against average. The redshirt junior also tallied career highs in points (4), shots (10) and shots on goal (3).
"As our Captain, Mathieu was a leader for our team in every game," Getman said "He played well in every match."
"This is a huge honor," Laurent said. "It is always nice when you get recognizes for the work you have been putting in."
Ferrin led the Blazers offensively in a plethora of categories, including goals (5), points (11), shots (39) and shots on goal (21). He started in every match since arriving on campus as a freshman. This season he set career highs in goals, assists, points and game winners including the deciding goal in a 2-1 win at Jacksonville.
"Massimo has been our most dangerous attacking player for two years," Getman said. "No one has created more scoring chances."
"It is a great honor to win this award and be recognized in such a strong conference," Ferrin said. "I love representing UAB and am thankful to be able to receive this award."
The trio marks 101 players from UAB to be named All-Conference USA in the Blazers 22 years in the league.
