BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Riding a wave of momentum following two strong performances at the Hilton Concord in Moraga, California, the UAB women's basketball team looks to match its success out west as it continues its four-game road swing on the east coast beginning with Appalachian State on Dec. 1. Tipoff is slated for 11 a.m. CST.
The Blazers (4-1) finished 1-1 in the tournament hosted by Saint Mary's College over Thanksgiving, highlighted by a 67-54 victory over UC-Santa Barbara. UAB also saw a valiant comeback fall short in the opening game of the event against Indiana.
"I think the girls have a lot of confidence coming off the trip to California," head coach Randy Norton said. "We have had a couple of really solid practices leading up to this trip which has allowed us to clean up some mistakes. I think we are in a good place. We face two tough opponents this weekend in Appalachian State and High Point, so we are going to need to play our best basketball to come out with two wins."
Junior Deanna Kuzmanic paced the Green and Gold in California, using career-high performances of 22 points against Indiana and 24 points against UC-Santa Barbara to lead a dynamic offensive attack. Guard Miyah Barnes was the only other Blazer to score in double figures in both games, posting 11 points against the Hoosiers and 17 points against the Gauchos.
Through the first five games of the season, sophomore Rachael Childress has been UAB's top attacking threat, averaging 15.8 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. Kuzmanic (13.8) and Barnes (12.0) round out the Blazer scorers averaging double figures.
Appalachian State (1-5) welcomes UAB to Boone, North Carolina, coming off its first win of the season, a 76-70 decision over College of Charleston. Friday's game marks the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
The Mountaineers are led by freshman guard Tierra Wilson, who is averaging 11.8 points per contest. Sophomore Bayley Plummer has also been solid for the Mountaineers, averaging 8.7 points and 11.8 boards per game.
