BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB volleyball team wraps up the 2017 regular season on the road at Marshall Saturday, Nov. 11 with first serve coming at 1 p.m. CT.
A spot in the Conference USA Tournament is on the line for both the Blazers and Thundering Herd. The formula is simple for UAB: win and it will punch its ticket to the C-USA Tournament for the first time since 2013.
UAB is currently in ninth place in the conference, just one spot outside of tournament contention. A win over Marshall would place the Green and Gold in a tie with the Thundering Herd for eighth. UAB would win the tiebreaker by way of winning the match Saturday.
The Blazers have been led all season by its seniors Gabby Deshotel, Haley Jared, Zahria Richard, Petra Silic and Erika Zembyla. Deshotel leads the team with 327 kills while Jared is second with 285 and Zembyla checks in at third with 225 kills.
Silic and Richard are fourth and sixth, respectively, with 194 kills and 76 kills. Zembyla leads the squad with 32 service aces and Silic is second on the team in blocks clocking 79 this season. Deshotel and Jared are second and third in digs recording 230 and 212.
Junior Emily Martinez leads UAB in digs with 420 while Freshman Shelby Holderfield tops the Blazers in assists tallying 664 going into the final regular season match.
Marshall comes into the match having lost two of its last three, including dropping its last match to UTEP in five sets. Jac'cara Walker leads the Thundering Herd with 350 kills, while Madison Hill is second with 308 kills.
Madelyn Cole has 943 assists and 102 kills this season and has scored 25 service aces. Only Walker has more aces than Cole, racking up 32 this season.
UAB lead the all-time series with Marshall 12-10 with its last win in the series coming in 2015.
