UAB Offense Explodes in 113-20 Win Over Montevallo

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomore Katelynn Thomas scored 22 points and hauled in nine rebounds as the UAB women's basketball team cruised to a 113-20 win over the Montevallo Falcons in Bartow Arena on Wednesday night.
Thomas finished the game shooting 62.5 percent (10-for-16) to pace a strong offensive effort by the Blazers which finished the game shooting 52.2 percent (36-for-69) from the field.
All 11 Blazers that saw the court found themselves on the score sheet with five players scoring in double figures while the UAB defense held the Falcons to 20 points on 12.1 percent shooting (8-for-66).
"I thought we really executed our transition tonight," head coach Randy Norton said. "Another thing that really stood out to me was we took care of the basketball. I thought everyone was really unselfish. Defensively, we need to continue to get better. We will come back on Friday and continue to improve before our game next Tuesday."
Sophomore Imani Johnson posted a double-double off the bench for the Blazers, racking up 15 points and bringing down 12 rebounds in 23 minutes of competition.
Deanna Kuzmanic, T'erra Lewis and Maya Garland each tallied 13 points as part of the offensive attack, while Rachael Childress, Angela Vendrell and Talia Roldan each posted nine points in the win.
UAB's defense was dominant on Wednesday night as it held Montevallo under 10 points in all four quarters, including holding the Falcons scoreless in the second period. Overall, the Blazers forced 20 turnovers and posted 14 steals and five blocks.
Kuzmanic was the Blazers' best defensive performer, recording three blocks and four steals in her 17 minutes on the court.
Montevallo was led by senior Albanellys Perez who finished the game with nine points.
UAB returns to action on Nov. 7 as the team hosts Judson College at 6 p.m. The Blazers' first regular season game will be Nov. 11 against Mississippi Valley State at 2 p.m. in Bartow Arena.
For tickets, UAB fans have the opportunity to purchase a Gold Card which allows access to six different sports, including women's basketball, baseball and softball, throughout the upcoming season.
A single admission Gold Card is $65, while a dual admission card can be purchased for $120, admission for three is $165, and a 4-pack of Gold Cards is $200. Fans who purchase a Gold Card will be given a membership card they show to gain admission into each specific event. Fans can purchase a Gold Card at the UAB Athletics Ticket Office located at Bartow Arena, or by calling 205-975-UAB1.
