BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Amy Brewer scored her fifth game-winning goal of the season and UAB clinched a spot in the Conference USA Tournament with a 2-1 victory over Middle Tennessee Friday night at BBVA Compass Field.
UAB (12-3-3, 6-2-1) sits in fifth place in the league standings and will play for the conference championship for the first time since 2013. The Blazers would finish the regular season in second place with a win Sunday against WKU. The conference tournament begins Wednesday, Nov. 1 and and takes place in Boca Raton, Fla., on the campus of Florida Atlantic.
Sophomore Jamiera Lunsford, who was making her first start of the season, put UAB on top 1-0 early in the first half when she scored in the 11th minute for her second goal of the year. Natalie Presedo starting the play by dribbling down the middle of the field and sending a through ball to the feet of a streaking Lunsford. Taking the ball in stride, Lunsford dribbled past a defender and fired a shot towards the far post and past keeper Sydney Chalcraft.
"We wanted to give our team something fresh tonight because we know as a staff that we have a group that is very coachable and receptive to these kinds of adjustments," UAB head coach Erica Demers said. "We're a very deep team up front and I think tonight our kids really took advantage of the minutes they got and wanted to show what they are capable of."
Middle Tennessee (8-9-0, 5-5-0) tied the score midway through the first half on a goal from Sydney Navarro in the 27th minute. Amber Hoot picked up an assist on the play as her feed into the box allowed Navarro to strike for her second goal of the season.
Brewer answered early in the second half with her 10th goal of the season to put the Blazers back on top. Freshman Lucy Thrasher delivered a corner kick into the Middle Tennessee box where Brewer pushed a shot over a leaping Chalcraft.
"I always go into any game trying to score, but I think this was the most exciting game to score in because my entire family was here and it was Senior Night," Brewer said. "I was just so excited."
Brewer now has the 10th-most points in school history in a single season with 25, and her 10 goals are tied for the seventh-most for a single season.
UAB keeper Kelsey Daugherty finished with four saves and has allowed one goal or fewer in 14 of the 18 games thus far this season.
The Blazers honored seniors Rachel Green, Morgan Terry, Katherine Foster, Bri Kuestersteffen, Morgan Key-Adams and Brewer in a ceremony prior to kickoff.
"I'm so happy our seniors could walk off the field with a win tonight," Demers added. "We're going to miss those girls so much. They are great ambassadors for our program on and off the field and I wish I could coach them for another year."
UAB closes the regular season Sunday at 1 p.m. when the Blazers host WKU at BBVA Compass Field.
