BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women's soccer team takes to the road for the final time during the regular season when the Blazers travel to the Lone Star State to face North Texas Friday at 7 p.m. and UTSA Sunday at 1 p.m.
UAB (9-1-3, 3-0-1) ran its unbeaten streak to a school-record nine games with a 4-2 victory last Friday over Marshall. Midfielder Amy Brewer notched her second hat trick of the season and Rachel Green added a goal late in the second half to lead the Blazers to the victory.
Brewer was tabbed the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week to become only the second student-athlete in school history to win the award twice in the same season. The Peachtree City, Ga., native enters the weekend leading UAB in goals (9), assists (4), points (22) and shots (32). She also stands second in Conference USA in both goals and assists.
Freshman Megan Hudgens picked up an assist against the Thundering Herd and ranks second on the team with 16 points on six goals and four assists. Senior Rachel Green adds 15 points on six goals and three assists.
North Texas (9-2-2, 4-0-1) enters play Friday on a four-game winning streak and a nine-match unbeaten streak. The Mean Green haven't lost since falling 1-0 at home to Texas on Aug. 27. During its current winning streak, the Mean Green is outscoring opponents 16-1, which includes a 4-0 home win over UTSA last Sunday. As a team, the Mean Green lead Conference USA in points (95), goals (34) and shots (282).
Freshman forward Berklee Peters leads North Texas with 14 points on five goals and four assists, while junior forward Taylor Torres stands second on the team with 12 points on five goals and two assists. Keeper Brooke Bradley has appeared in 10 games and has allowed five goals and owns a 0.63 goals against average. Miranda Schoening has played in seven games in net and boasts a 0.73 goals against average.
"This will be the most challenging weekend to date for our program," UAB head coach Erica Demers said. "North Texas has proven to know how to win and have had years of tremendous success in the history of their program. Our details will have to be spot on to have success against them."
UTSA (2-11-0, 1-5-0) begins the weekend on a four-match losing streak after falling 4-0 Sunday at North Texas. The Roadrunners have scored just one goal during the losing streak and have been shutout in three consecutive games.
Freshman Ellis Patterson paces the UTSA offense with nine points on four goals and one assist, while junior Channing Machen is second on the team with three goals.
"We will quickly turn around and play a much rested UTSA program who does not play Friday night," Demers added. "It will be vital for us to recover our players as best we can in preparation for this match."
