Hall of Fame Q&A — Jerome Mincy

On Friday October 13th, the UAB Department of Athletics will induct five new members into the Hall of Fame. Men's Basketball star Jerome Mincy played for UAB from 1982-86. Mincy was a two-time All-Sun Belt First Team selection and was named to the Sun Belt's 30th Anniversary Team.
Mincy is also the career leader in free throws made (459), eighth on the all-time scoring list at 1,473 points, ninth in career field goals made with 507, and fifth in career blocks (131). Mincy was peppered with honors throughout his career, which included a spot on the Basketball Weekly Freshman All-American team following the 1982-83 season.
What does UAB mean to you?
"UAB means a lot to me. UAB played a major role in my development from a youth to an adult. It also prepared me educationally and independently."
What is your best memory playing at UAB?
"I enjoyed all of my years at UAB. My fondest memory was when we won the Great Alaska Shootout in 1984. That's when we realized we were one of the top programs in the nation."
What does it mean to you to be inducted into the UAB Hall of Fame?
"Being inducted into the UAB Hall of Fame is truly an honor because it means I am a part of the tradition forever."
What do you think of the way UAB has grown since you played here?
"The progress at UAB is overwhelming. I never imagined the university could overcome such huge boundaries."
Looking back, how did UAB help mold you into the person that you are today?
"My education and training experiences both on and off the court made the biggest impact on me. Just the college life in general is something that I will cherish for the rest of my life."
