On Friday night, the UAB Department of Athletics will induct five new members into the Hall of Fame. Deanna Jackson played for UAB from 1998-2002. Jackson finished her career with 2,144 career points and was named to the Conference USA All-Decade Team in March 2005. She was the first Conference USA player to record 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career.
Jackson was the first Blazer drafted into the WNBA, as she was taken by the Cleveland Rockets with the eighth overall pick in the 2002 draft.
What was your initial reaction when you found out you were being inducted into the Hall of Fame?
"I was excited when I found out I was being inducted into the Hall of Fame. I know this is a great accomplishment, but it still hasn't hit me yet."
What is your best memory playing at UAB?
"My best memory is making it to the Sweet 16. The Big Dance. We made history."
What is your proudest accomplishment as a student-athlete at UAB?
"My proudest accomplishment as a Blazer was getting my degree. It took me a minute, but I finally got it."
How did your time at UAB impact you, both on and off the court?
"On the court, I learned how to work with others set goals and shoot for them and never give up. Off the court has helped me achieve independence and gain financial responsibility that prepared me for the real world."
What does UAB mean to you?
"UAB means family. Everyone from the staff, professors, athletic director, coaches, president, vice president and more treated me like family. I was so happy with the love and support from UAB that I decided to make Birmingham my home."
