UAB Volleyball Snags First Conference Win of the Season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UAB volleyball team defeated the Charlotte 49ers in three straight sets, 3-0 (25-19, 29-27, 25-18), to pick up its first conference win of the season on Friday afternoon.
Erika Zembyla led the UAB (8-10, 1-2) offense with 16 kills and posted a match-best .464 hitting percentage while Haley Jared finished second on the team with 12 kills for a .391 clip. Amber Treace controlled the offense with a match-high 45 assists.
Victoria Young continues to lead the defensive effort for the Blazers. She recorded six total blocks while the team tallied 11 as a whole. Emily Martinez led the match with 17 digs and three service aces.
UAB kept the first set interesting with 10 ties as late as 18-18 but a kill from Jared gave the Blazers the go-ahead point and they never looked back as they cruised to a 25-19 first set win.
The Blazers defeated the 49ers in a thrilling second set by a score of 29-27. With the score tied 27-27, Jared recorded a kill to take the lead and an ace to clinch the win.
UAB held Charlotte to a match-low .071 hitting percentage in the third set and ran away with a 25-18 win.
Janell Sparks struck 14 kills for Charlotte (6-11, 0-3) and posted a .220 attack percentage. No other 49er recorded over four kills. Anna Henderson was solid at the net, recording a match-high seven total blocks.
UAB hits the road and travels to Miami, Fla., to battle FIU Sunday, Oct. 2. The Panthers have a 6-10 overall record and are 0-2 in Conference USA play.
