UAB Falls at FIU

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB volleyball team fell to FIU in three sets, 3-0 (25-16, 27-25, 25-22), on Sunday afternoon at the FIU Arena.
UAB (8-11, 1-3) hit .253 in the match while FIU (7-10, 1-2) posted a .382 attack percentage and put itself back in the winning column after dropping a match to Florida Atlantic on Friday.
Erika Zembyla led the Blazers, and tied for match-high honors, with 12 kills and posted a .375 hitting percentage. Victoria Young had seven kills and hit .429 to lead the Blazers in the latter category.
UAB jumped to an early 7-1 lead in the first set but FIU battled back and eventually tied the score 12-12. A five-point swing midway through the first set allowed the Panthers take control on their way to a 25-16 win.
The second set was the closest of the match with six ties. FIU seemed in control with a 17-12 lead but the Blazers scored four straight to pull within one. The score was knotted at 25 when the Panthers recorded a kill and a block to clinch the 27-25 victory.
After the break, the Panthers seized control when they pulled ahead 17-10. The Blazers battled back and came within three, 24-21, but the comeback effort wasn’t enough as the Panthers won the final set 25-22.
Katie Hogan and Tia Clay led FIU with 12 kills while Hogan had a match-high seven digs.
The Blazers return to the floor on Friday when they return home to host North Texas at Bartow Arena at 11:30 a.m.
