BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women’s soccer team remained unbeaten in its last five home games after playing to a 0-0 tie with FIU Friday evening in double overtime from BBVA Compass Field.
UAB (4-5-1, 1-1-1 C-USA) received another stellar outing in net from sophomore keeper Kelsey Daugherty, as the Kennesaw, Ga., native stopped four shots and registered her third shutout of the season. Daugherty, the reigning Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Week, has not allowed a goal at home over her last 322:42 minutes.
Rachel Green nearly put UAB ahead early in the first half with a shot from just outside the box that forced FIU keeper Sophia Trujillo to make a leaping save. After receiving the ball in space on the left side of the field, Green dribbled towards the FIU goal, cut to her right and fired a shot that hit off Trujillo’s hands before ricocheting off the crossbar and back into the field of play.
The Blazers were once again victims of the crossbar near the end of regulation in the 86th minute. This time freshman forward Megan Hudgens put a shot on goal only to have Trujillo slap the ball onto the cross bar and then over the end line.
“It was frustrating to play that hard and for that long and not put away any chances,” midfielder Marin Carter said. “I think defensively we played well and were able to hold a good team scoreless. You always want to win your league games, but we can be satisfied with grinding out a result that allows us to pick up a point in the standings.”
UAB came inches for netting the golden goal under three minutes into the second overtime on a shot from midfielder Jessica Do in the 103rd minute. Do knifed her way past the FIU back line and received a pass deep inside the box. After turning and putting herself in position to strike, Do sent a shot that sailed inches over the top of the goal.
“It would have been much better to walk away with three points, but we will take the one point because it’s always good to walk away with something,” UAB head coach Harold Warren said. “They have a good team and now we have to recover for another grinder game on Sunday.”
UAB closes its three-game homestand Sunday at 1 p.m. when the Blazers host Florida Atlantic.
