BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Megan Hudgens netted the game-winning goal in double overtime to lift the UAB women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over UTEP Sunday afternoon from BBVA Compass Field.
Hudgens scored with just over a minute remaining in double overtime to help UAB capture its third straight home victory, collect three points in the league standings and snap UTEP's two-game winning streak in the process.
Rachel Green registered her team-leading fifth assist on the play when her initial shot was slapped back into the field of play by UTEP keeper Alyssa Palacios. Hudgens collected the rebound and sent a shot into the back corner of the net to post just the fifth goal \scored on the Miners all season.
"Their defense started to crowd the middle and Rachel was wide open and played a great ball into the box," Hudgens said. "I was coming inside and was able to get a shot off in time. This win just shows what can happen when we play all the way to the end and play as hard as we did today."
UAB (4-5-0, 1-1-0) outshot UTEP 16-11 and finished with a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. The Blazer also controlled possession for the majority of regulation and overtime and peppered Palacios with an onslaught of scoring chances throughout the match.
Hudgens and midfielder Jessica Do each paced UAB with four shots apiece. Do leads UAB with nine points on four goals and one assists, while Hudgens is tied for second on the squad with seven points on two goals and three assists.
"We spent all week talking about commitment to ourselves as individuals and as a team," UAB head coach Harold Warren said. "Both teams fought hard today, but we were hungrier and stronger mentally. We've just got to keep that mindset going forward."
Blazer keeper Kelsey Daugherty made four saves and picked up her second shutout of the season.
UAB returns to the pitch Friday at 7 p.m. when the Blazers welcome FIU to BBVA Compass Field.
