UAB Drops Two in Fight Like Hal Memorial Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on Friday to close play at the Fight Like Hal Memorial Invitational. The Blazers lost in four sets to UT Martin, then lost in three sets to Memphis.
UAB 1, UTM 3
UAB (8-7) fell in the first match of the day against UT Martin (4-10) in four sets (24-26, 21-25, 25-21, 19-25). Erika Zembyla led the way for the Blazers with 16 kills for a .213 hitting percentage. She led a UAB team that hit .211 in the match while UT Martin hit .300.
Emily Rudolph, Amber Treace and Victoria Young all contributed two blocks in the match while Emily Martinez recorded 22 digs to lead the defensive effort.
The first set was the closest of the match with five lead changes and 14 ties. The score was tied as late as 24-24 when a Skyhawk kill and a Blazer attack error gave UT Martin the 26-24 win.
UT Martin tallied 16 kills and a match-high .344 attack percentage on its way to a 25-21 second set victory.
The Blazers rallied back and won the back-and-forth third set, 25-21. There were 10 lead changes and 13 ties before UAB took control and captured the win.
The Skyhawks jumped to an early lead in the fourth set and never fell behind on their way to a 25-19 win to claim the match.
Madison Wessling posted a match-high 17 kills for a .333 attack percentage. Jemima Idemudia tallied a team-high four total blocks while Colleen Larson recorded 18 digs.
UAB 0, MEMPHIS 3
UAB closed their run in the tournament with a three-set loss to Memphis (17-25, 23-25, 13-25), falling to a Tigers (7-4) team that is undefeated on the weekend.
Silic posted a team-high ten kills and the Blazers hit .124 as a team in the match with 31 kills and six total team blocks.
The Blazers posted a .109 hitting percentage in the opening set and saw Memphis take a 25-17 win to start the match.
The second set featured 15 ties, including as late as 23-23. However, the Tigers recorded back-to-back kills to claim the 25-23 victory.
UAB then hit .143 in the third set that saw the Blazers fall victim to an early six-point run by Memphis. UAB couldn’t rally and the Tigers cruised their way to a 25-13 win.
The Blazers return to the court on Friday when they host Middle Tennessee at 7 p.m. to begin Conference USA play.
