UAB Hosts In-State Rival Troy on Tuesday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB volleyball team returns home to host in-state rival Troy for a mid-week match at Bartow Arena on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m.

The Series
UAB leads the all-time series 22-6 against Troy. The last time the two teams played, the Trojans defeated the Blazers 3-2 in Trojan Arena.
On UAB
The Blazers are coming off a 3-1 weekend where they finished second at the Jax State Invitational. UAB picked up wins against Mississippi Valley State, Jackson State and New Orleans, all in a three-set sweep.
“We are excited to be back in front of a home crowd,” head coach Kerry Messersmith said. “We’re coming off a big weekend and the girls have a lot more confidence and hopefully that will push us into having a successful week full of home matches.”
Emily Martinez has led the Blazers’ backline this season, averaging 4.49 digs per set, the fourth best mark in Conference USA. At the net defensively, Victoria Young ranks fifth in the conference with 1.16 blocks per set.
Offensively, Erika Zembyla leads the Blazers with 3.26 kills per set, while Haley Jared is one step behind her averaging 3.08 kills per set. Amber Treace paces the team with a .397 attack percentage.
Scouting Troy
Troy was last in action on Saturday when the Trojans defeated Chicago State in four sets on the final day of the ISTAP Collegiate Cup Invitational. Troy has won three of its last four matches, with the lone loss coming against New Mexico State.
The Trojans are led by Sara Landis with 89 kills for a .289 attack percentage and Reina Terry controls the offense with 265 assists. Defensively, Leah Causey has a team-high 36 blocks and Alisha Hinrichs has recorded 98 digs for Troy.
A Look Ahead
UAB will host the annual Fight Like Hal Memorial Invitational from Sept. 15-17. Teams participating are UL Lafayette, Memphis and UT Martin.
