BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Kirstin Robertson scored the game-winning goal minutes before halftime to lead Austin Peay to a 2-1 victory over UAB Friday evening from BBVA Compass Field.
Robertson gained control just outside the UAB box and dribbled to her left before firing a shot into the back corner of the next to put the Governors ahead in the 39th minute.
Nicole Wojcik gave Austin Peay its first lead midway through the first half when she converted a one-timer past Blazer keeper Kelsey Daugherty in the 23rd minute. Pamela Penaloza started the scoring play with a pass into the corner, where a streaking Gina Fabbro sent a cross into the Blazer box that found the feet of Wojcik.
Caroline Kehrer pulled UAB even in the 33rd minute after her shot inside the Governor box found its way past a diving Lindsey Todd. Katherine Foster picked up an assist on the play after her corner kick gave Kehrer the opportunity to net the equalizer.
"This is a disappointing outcome," UAB head coach Harold Warren said. "Give Austin Peay credit for coming out tonight and working as hard as they did. We have to find a way of coming out strong in both halves. We weren't as strong as we needed to be early in the game and towards the end of the game."
The UAB offense nearly scored potential game-tying goals late in the second half, as Jessica Do and Rachel Green featured strong shots on net that sailed just wide of the post. The Blazers held a 7-3 edge in shots and a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks in the second half.
UAB returns to the pitch Sunday at 7 p.m. when the Blazers host UT Martin from BBVA Compass Field in the first meeting between the two schools.
