Tjia Announces 2016-17 Women's Tennis Schedule

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ten home matches, four fall tournaments and marquee contests with Alabama, Mississippi State, Georgia State, South Alabama and USF highlight a challenging and exciting 2016-17 UAB women’s tennis schedule, it was announced on Tuesday by head coach Mark Tjia.
UAB opens its fall season with a trip to Midland, Texas, to take part in the Midland Intercollegiate (Sept. 16-18). The Blazers will also participate in the Samford Intercollegiate (Sept. 30-Oct. 1) before heading to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships (Oct. 14-17) and the Roberta Allison Fall Classic (Oct. 28-30).
“We are all very excited that our schedule is complete and that we play many very challenging opponents that will make us a better team,” Tjia said. “The tournaments in the fall feature some of the best teams in the nation.”
The Blazers embark on a four-match road trip to open the spring season that will take UAB to Lipscomb (Jan. 13), Alabama (Jan. 15), Memphis (Jan. 20) and Mississippi State (Jan. 22).
UAB also features road matches against Samford (Feb. 9), Georgia State (Feb. 18), Kennesaw State (Feb. 19), North Florida (March 14), Stetson (March 15), USF (March 18), Middle Tennessee (April 7) and Southern Miss (April 8).
Home competition kicks off for the Blazers Feb. 4 when UAB hosts Conference USA foe Louisiana Tech from George Ward Park. The Blazers also play home matches with South Alabama (Feb. 12), Troy (Feb. 25), Arkansas State (Feb. 26), UT Martin (March 4), Tulane (March 5), Chattanooga (March 11), Alabama State (March 26), Alabama A&M (March 26) and Jackson State (April 1).
“Our dual match schedule includes five teams that finished last season nationally-ranked, along with multiple others that were ranked at some point during the season,” Tjia added. “I know our teams is really looking forward to the challenges that await us and we’re excited to get to work to prepare for it.”
The Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championship is scheduled for April 20-23 and will take place in Denton, Texas, on the campus of the University of North Texas.
