IRVING, Texas – UAB senior distance runner Lucy Crookes was one of 17 female student-athletes named to the Conference USA Track and Field All-Academic Team, the league office announced on Friday.
Student-athletes must hold a minimum 3.2 grade point average and have used a year of eligibility to be nominated for the award. Crookes, who earned a spot on the team in both seasons at UAB, owns a perfect 4.0 grade point average in communication management.
“This award show Lucy’s commitment to both academics and athletics,” UAB Associate Coach Matt Esche said. “Lucy goes about her work quietly and with a purpose, and it’s wonderful to see it pay off with recognition like this.”
On the track, Crookes served as UAB’s top distance runner this season and ranked third in Conference USA in the 5,000 meters (16:30.68), fourth in the 3,000 meters (9:37.64) and sixth in the mile run (4:54.26) during the indoor season.
Crookes continued her success over the course of the outdoor season by ranking first in the league with a top time of 9:33.73 in the 3,000 meters. In addition, she ranked second in the conference in the 10,000 meters (34:26.06) and fifth in the 5,000 meters (16:37.94).
Crookes is scheduled to compete at the NCAA East Preliminary in the 5,000 meters Saturday at 7:05 p.m. from Jacksonville, Fla. The top-12 finishers automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships June 8-11 in Eugene, Ore.
