CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UAB baseball team used a two-run ninth inning to claim the first of three games in Charlotte. An RBI groundout and bunt single helped the Blazers overcome a one-run deficit at Hayes Stadium.
Left-hander Thomas Lowery yielded just one run over 6.1 innings of work, striking out six, but the 1-0 lead the Niners claimed in the fifth stood until the top of the ninth.
Charlotte third baseman Derek Gallello hit a solo home run to put his team up 1-0, but Lowery tossed another 1.1 innings of shutout baseball before yielding to Garrett Whitlock (4-5). The right-hander reliever kept the pace, throwing 2.2 innings of one-hit ball.
Jacob Armstrong led the UAB lineup with a 3-for-3 evening and kept the ninth inning alive with a momentum-shifting double. With Jared Nixon on with a leadoff single, Armstrong ripped the two-bagger down the line in left to put both runners in scoring position. Riley McCown tied the game with a groundout to second, and Adam Smith put the Blazers ahead 2-1 with a sneaky bunt single to third base.
The two teams are back in action tomorrow with a noon CDT first pitch. It is the third time in two days the game has been rescheduled due to impending inclement weather. Saturday’s game time is still TBA.
