BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB senior distance runner Lucy Crookes will represent the Blazers next week in Jacksonville, Fla., at the NCAA East Preliminary after qualifying for the meet in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters.
Crookes will compete in the 10,000 meters Thursday, May 26 at 8 p.m. and the 5,000 meters Saturday, May 28 at 7:05 p.m. from Hodges Stadium on the campus of the University of North Florida.
“Lucy has been such a huge asset to our team this season,” UAB head coach Kurt Thomas said. “Besides scoring points at conference championships, everyone’s goal is to be an NCAA qualifier. Coach Esche has done a tremendous job preparing her and getting race plans together. We’re excited to see her compete next week in Jacksonville.”
Crookes owns a top time of 34:26.06 (Stanford Invitational) in the 10,000 meters and 16:37.94 (C-USA Outdoor Championships) in the 5,000 meters this season.
“Lucy has done a tremendous job this season as an individual and for our program,” Esche said. “Last year at this time she was trying to find her motivation to run, and now she is an NCAA qualifier. Her performance this year shows how talented she is and how dangerous she can be next week in the first round.”
