BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB softball shortstop Caitlin Attfield was announced as one of 10 NCAA softball student-athletes selected as a finalist for the 2015-16 Senior CLASS Award.
To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must be classified as NCAA Division I seniors and excel on and off the field with notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their athletic platforms to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The finalists were chosen by national media from a list of 30 candidates announced earlier in the season. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner, and fans are encouraged to submit votes online at the Senior CLASS Award website through May 9.
Fan votes will be combined with those of the media and Division I head coaches to determine the winners. The Senior CLASS Award recipient for softball will be announced during the 2016 NCAA Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, from June 2-8.
Attfield is Conference USA's lone representative on the list of finalists.
In the classroom, the senior is on pace to graduate with her degree in kinesiology/exercise science with a cumulative GPA of 3.43. Attfield has received numerous academic recognitions throughout her career, being recognized as a two-time Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree and named as a C-USA All-Academic team selection in 2014 and 2015.
Though not an outspoken personality on the Blazers' squad, "President Atty," as she has been dubbed by her teammates, serves as the team's undisputed team captain. She is the first to share knowledge with her teammates and has evolved into a shining example of a leader off and on the field.
Attfield and the UAB softball team are involved in numerous community service projects in the Birmingham area and have volunteered in organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and Feed My Starving Children.
Via the Helper Helper app, UAB softball has volunteered more community service time than any other program that uses the tracking service.
A four-year starter, Attfield is a three-time All-Conference selection and has been named to the NFCA All-Region First Team twice. She also earned 2013 All-Freshman Team and Freshman of the Year honors and, in 2015, was the first Blazer in UAB history to earn C-USA Player of the Year.
She helped the Blazers notch 30 or more wins during her first three seasons, including winning the 2013 C-USA regular-season title her freshman season.
Attfield has played in two NCAA Regionals, helping UAB claim its first Regional victory in 2013.
She holds school records in batting average (.407), on-base percentage (.461), hits (273), runs scored (135), assists (406) and total bases (341), while holding single-season records for average (.473), total bases (120), on-base percentage (.511) and hits (88).
