BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team fell to South Alabama, 3-1, in a midweek, non-conference clash at Mary Bowers Field on Tuesday.
The South Alabama (15-10) pitching staff held UAB to three hits over seven innings as the Blazers (10-18) were led by senior Kelly Britt. The outfielder went 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI double.
“We’re 28 games into the year,” head coach Marla Townsend said. “That is the exact halfway point of our season. We are absolutely getting better. It is not about how you start. Yes, we would have liked to be off to a better start than we are; but if we can dig down deep and play our game this second half, we still can meet the goals we have set for this team.”
Junior Cara Goodwin earned the start and pitched five innings in the circle. The right-hander allowed three runs off three hits and one walk. The Cullman, Alabama, native struck out one Jaguar. Goodwin fell to 6-5 on the season.
Sophomore Megan Smith pitched two innings of shutout relief as she scattered two hits and struck out two.
Destin Vicknair earned the victory for South Alabama, improving to 7-3 on the season. Vicknair allowed one run off three hits and struck out two batters in her five innings of work.
Capitalizing on a leadoff walk, South Alabama jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning scoring two runs off three hits; but the Blazers answered back in the bottom of the second. After senior Sara Beth Williamson reached on a fielder’s choice, Britt drove her home with an RBI double to right center.
The Jaguars pushed the lead, 3-1, in the top of the third after Stephanie Pilkington knocked a two-out double and was driven home on a single up the middle by Haleigh Lowe.
UAB returns to conference action this weekend as the Blazers host Charlotte in a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT.
