UAB Baseball Hosts Alabama Tuesday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB baseball team hosts Alabama, its second Southeastern Conference foe of the season, Tuesday at Regions Field. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
The Blazers and Crimson Tide are set to meet for the 66th time in the programs’ histories. Alabama currently holds a 43-22 advantage over the Green and Gold. The teams last met twice in 2015 with the Tide’s taking both contests. Alabama claimed a 7-2 win at Regions Field and 5-1 victory in Tuscaloosa.
UAB is 8-12 on the year and recently took two of three from Louisiana Tech University to begin the Conference USA season at 2-1. The Blazers outscored the Bulldogs, 22-13, winning the first two, 7-1 and 10-8, while falling by one run in the Sunday finale.
Senior outfielder Griffin Gum has bumped his average up to .324 this season, tearing up opposing pitching in his last 10 games. Gum is hitting .323 with 10 hits in his last 10 games, and an impressive .421 in his last five with eight hits. He has drawn five walks in the 10-game stretch, as well as driven in three runs and smacked two doubles.
Junior Adam Lamar is set to start for UAB on the mound against the Tide. The left-hander is 2-1 with a team-best 1.88 ERA among starting pitchers. He has thrown 24 innings and has been part of two shutouts. He threw 2.1 innings in a relief appearance against LA Tech on Friday. He allowed just one hit en route to shutting out the Bulldogs.
Alabama comes to the Magic City with a 13-6 overall record and 2-1 SEC mark. The Crimson Tide opened SEC play over the weekend with two wins over LSU. Alabama is 1-1 against opponents shared with UAB. The Tide took a 2-1 game over Troy earlier in the season and recently fell 9-2 to Southern Miss in Hattiesburg.
Senior Chance Vincent leads the Alabama offense with a .302 average and has started every game this season. The infielder is tied for the team lead with 19 hits and has one extra-base hit. Freshman Chandler Taylor heads up the power department with four home runs and 11 RBIs.
Junior Mike Oczypok is scheduled to take the hill for the Tide. The right-hander is 2-1 with a 4.02 ERA in two starts. Oczypok has appeared in five games and thrown 15.2 innings, picking up wins against Nicholls State and Niagara. He received his loss in his most recent start, surrendering six runs on eight hits to Southern Miss.
