Blazers Finish Strong at Meyo Invitational

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- UAB senior distance runner Lucy Crookes set a personal-best time in the 5000 meters and Zieandrea Bridges set a freshman school record to highlight competition for the Blazers over the weekend at the prestigious Meyo Invitational.
Crookes turned in a time of 16:56.78 on her way to a sixth place finish, marking the fourth time this season she has finished in the top six of an event. The Yorkshire, England, native posted the fastest time of anyone in Conference USA last weekend after racing to a time of 9:38.40 in the 3000 meters at the Vanderbilt Invitational.
"Lucy ran a great race and was the highlight of day one," UAB head coach Kurt Thomas said. "She was sick most of the week, but showed how gutsy she is by how strong of a race she ran."
Bridges broke her own freshman school record in the shot put when she recorded a distance of 39-07.25 en route to a 33rd place finish. The Clarkdale, Ga., native originally set the record earlier in the season after posting a distance of 39-01.25 at the Birmingham-Southern Icebreaker.
Junior Hannah Coffin set a personal-best time of 10:15.14 in the 3000 meters, while, junior sprinter Fanta Diabate raced to a personal-best time of 57.45 in the 400 meters.
"We saw some good progress in some events during day two," Thomas added. "Hannah ran well in the 3000 meters and put herself in position to score points at the conference championships. Fanta was itching to have a breakout race for and she did that today by running well in the 400 meters."
UAB returns to action Feb. 12-13 when the Blazers take part in the Samford Open at the Birmingham Crossplex.
