Blazer Trio Posts Strong Weekend at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB track and field team competed in its final two indoor meets of the regular season this weekend when the Blazers took part in both the Samford Invitational and Samford Open from the Birmingham CrossPlex.
At the Samford Invitational on Friday, sophomore Jimmeshia Wilder posted personal best times in the 800 meters (2:30.82) and the 60-meter hurdles (9.38) to lead the Blazers in running events.
Distance runner Rebecca Evans placed 10th in the mile run with a time of 5:02.36, while junior Hannah Coffin turned in a personal-best time of 5:06.70 on her way to a 14th place finish.
Sophomore Ali Meister sprinted to a personal-best mark of 9.02 in the 60-meter hurdles, and fellow sophomore Hannah Hensley did the same with her time of 9.29.
In field events, Hensley continued her stellar weekend by leaping to a personal-best distance in the long jump with a mark of 18-06.50 to go along with an eighth place finish. Meister followed suit with a distance of 17-06.75 for her best indoor jump in a UAB uniform.
Freshman Aisha Nelson highlighted competition for UAB on Saturday at the Samford Open by turning in a third place finish in the high jump with a height of 5-05.00.
“We saw a lot of positives this weekend,” UAB head coach Kurt Thomas said. “Our multi-event athletes all had personal records in several different events. That should really prepare them to score points at the conference championships in the coming days. Everyone competed with a good spark this weekend, and we need to build off that and not lose that feeling heading into conference championships.”
UAB closes the indoor season Feb. 24-25 when the Blazers host the Conference USA Championships from the Birmingham CrossPlex.
