UAB Falls to No. 23 Western Kentucky

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB volleyball team fell to No. 23 Western Kentucky for the second time this season Sunday afternoon in Bartow Arena.
Erika Zembyla led the Blazers’ offense with 11 kills and posted a team-high .258 attack percentage from the outside hitter position. She was also second on the team with three blocks and seven digs.
Haley Jared had the second highest number of kills on the team with seven for a .200 hitting percentage and recorded one block in the match.
Defensively, Emily Martinez led the squad with eight digs and Victoria Young had a match-high four blocks while the team tallied seven as a whole.
WKU pulled ahead 5-1 in the first set but the Blazers rallied back and kept the score close the entire set before falling 25-21.
The Hilltoppers dominated the second set as they jumped to an early 11-1 lead. UAB couldn’t recover from the early points scored by WKU and dropped the set 25-11.
After the break, WKU was back at it again and was in control with a 12-5 lead. The Blazers tried to rally but couldn’t string together enough consecutive points to overtake the set and eventually lost 25-16.
Alyssa Cavanaugh put on a show for the Hilltoppers with 17 kills for a .279 attack percentage. Rachel Anderson contributed to the win with 12 kills and an impressive .500 mark. Jessica Lucas paced the WKU offense with 36 assists and also led the match with 12 digs.
The Blazers are back on the road next weekend as they travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., Friday, Nov. 4 to face Southern Miss at Reed Green Coliseum.
