TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Marlene Herrmann won three singles matches on her way to claiming the individual title in the Susan Carver Draw on Saturday at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic hosted by the University of Alabama.
Herrmann opened the two-day event Friday with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Josephine Cao of Memphis. The Dresden, Germany, advanced in the following match when Delaney Edwards of Chattanooga retired due to injury with Herrmann leading 5-2. Herrmann captured the title Saturday following her 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Elsa Pool of Samford.
“Marlene Herrmann took another step in her development in singles by winning her flight,” UAB head coach Mark Tjia said. “In her final today, she had opportunities to mail it in and she chose not to go down that path. She will be a better player because of the way she responded today.”
Herrmann also fought her way back with teammate Pardis Kianoush to win the consolation bracket of the Nancy Harris Doubles Draw. After the duo suffered a narrow 8-7 (1) setback in their opening match, Herrmann and Kianoush answered with an 8-7 (4) win over Georgina Morral and Amina Mukhametshina of West Alabama. In the finals, Herrmann and Kianoush bested Cao and Gabrielle Paul of Memphis 8-7 to earn the crown.
"Our doubles team of Herrmann and Kianoush get better every time out,” Tjia added. “They had all three of their matches go to tiebreakers against solid teams and were still able to win two of three.”
UAB begins its spring schedule Jan. 13 at Lipscomb.
“The next step for us as a team now that the fall season is over is to work on getting the entire team healthy for the spring,” Tjia said.”
